Can men who have erectile dysfunction get bigger erections when they masturbate?

Question:

For the time that I have dated and then married my husband, there have been times that he has not been able to have an erection for intercourse.

My husband is quite young at only 37. I consider him healthy, does not take any medication, does not smoke or drink. He has daily exercise in his routine.
He insists that there is not a problem between us and that I am not the cause of him not being able to have an erection. Interestingly he can masturbate and keep his erections and a times he can sustain an erection enough for us to have intimate relations.

I am not convinced that it is not caused by an issue he has about me. Because he can masturbate and get erections with no problem. Is this the way it is with men that have erectile dysfunction(ED)?
Answer

Yes; this is not a rare occurrence. I will tell you right away though that it has nothing to do with you but your fears are normal.

However, you may want to know that masturbation causes less stress for men than sexual intercourse does, so it is possible that he gets nervous having sex with you. Find out what you can do to help him relax as this can help a lot.
I feel that he needs to have a visit to the doctor for a look at things like diabetes and also an exam of the genitals as well as a blood and urine test.
There is a good chance that there is nothing serious to worry about. The odds are that there’s nothing serious going on here.

I wish you all the best.
Yours sincerely,
