Erection problems due to excessive anxiety

Question:

I have this problem that is bothering me and threatens to affect my relationship with my wife. It is that I cannot have a strong erection nor sustain it for long. It is the same whether in masturbation or during intercourse.
My dear wife now wonders if we can ever have normal sex again. I feel that I may be too anxious to perform well. I worry about getting and keeping an erection long enough to satisfy my wife.
I am very frustrated by this and I am seeking your advice. I want to get back my erections and my love life. I will be very grateful to you as I feel such a failure.

Answer:

I am really concerned about your erection problems and I particularly not that you have used the word worried several times in your letter so I believe that this is a very big problem in your life.
I do believe that anxiety is the cause of your erection problems as is commonly the cause in people of your age (27).
What I can advise you to do is to go see a doctor and get some exams done on you. This is what you can expect the doctor to do- he will carry out some tests that will determine whether or not physical reasons are the cause.
If not then I should imagine that counseling will do it for you. It is usually offered at a sexual medicine clinic where you will learn to handle your anxiety.

If no physical cause is found, commonsense counseling from a sexual medicine clinic should help. They will help you to learn to reduce your anxiety levels.

Although medication may help it should be a last resort.
I’m sure you’ll be OK,

Good luck.
