Though this subject used to be taboo, it is now a very widely discussed topic. Men have always suffered from erectile dysfunction, but in the past it was always viewed as a sign of weakness or impotence in all areas. Thankfully, through our evolving as a society this is now not the case. Today there are a plethora of options for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction as well as those who simply would like to have bigger, stronger, fuller erections.

Step 1

Look into prescription medications or generic equivalents. Today’s medicine is well equipped to deal with the issues of erectile dysfunction. If you’ve been unable to achieve or maintain a solid erection during intercourse, there are many safe drugs that can help with your problem. Viagra is perhaps the most well known of all the drugs. It should be taken 30 minutes prior to sexual activity and will cause the penis to become erect for the duration of the sex. For those men who don’t want to feel like they have to plan all their sex, Cialis allows one to take a pill at least 30 minutes before sex, but lasts 72 hours leaving the patient feeling prepared and not having to worry about taking the pill so often. Please discuss all the options with your doctor to determine which is right for you.

Step 2

Try topical creams. If you don’t feel like going the prescription drug route, there are creams out there that can help you accomplish a sustainable erection. These creams can be bought online, or purchased at a novelty sex store in your area (assuming your area has such kinds of businesses). Working much in the same way as the prescription drugs, topical creams are simply applied to the penis and should work immediately. The major complaints by patients is the mess caused by the creams as well as making it obvious to the partner that some sort of extra help is needed to achieve an erection.

Step 3

Experiment with exercises. Sometimes the key to lasting longer and achieving an erection lies in simply strengthening the muscles in the penis.
Try the following exercise: the next time you urinate, squeeze the muscle in your penis that stops the flow of urine (without using your hand). This is the same muscle needed for stronger bigger erections. Work it in the same way you would work any other muscle by means of a series of progressive exercises. Try progressively contracting the muscle for longer and longer periods and repeat throughout the day. This will help allow blood to keep trapped in the penis and in turn allow bigger stronger erections tat last longer.

Step 4

Eat the right foods. Each culture around the world has found “natural aphrodisiacs” in different types of food. And, though there is little science to back it up, it could be the right mentality if thought about in reverse. Though there might not be foods that help achieve an erection, there could be foods that might eventually prevent an erection. Keep yourself on a healthy well balanced diet and improvements in energy should be seen immediately. As your general health improves, so will your sexual state. Blood flow is the essential element in having an erection. Therefore, it is best not to eat food that could clog arteries or veins, thus inhibiting blood flow throughout the body including the penis.

Step 5

Smoking causes of erectile dysfunction. There is no denying it. Nicotine plays a big role in constricting blood flow. Keeping nicotine out of the body and exercising often will you’re your body in the ideal conditions for being able to achieve high quality natural erections.

Q: Hi, I’m 19 and i’m experiencing a problem getting erections before sex.
When i’m fooling around with a girl i’m usually rock hard right up until we start taking our clothes off. Then by the time we’re about to have sex i’ve gone soft and cant get hard again.

The only time i’ve ever been able to have sex before is when I was drunk because it takes the nervous factor out of the situation. I know this must be nerves because I never have a problem getting hard when I’m not with a girl.

Can someone help ?

A:
First alcohol effects your ability to get an erect penis… a lot. Do not drink any alcohol before sex.
Second relax and just enjoy yourself, state of mind state is important also.
Third, I wouldn’t recommend getting drunk then taking Cialis or any ED drugs. Based on known pharmacology of the drugs, patients taking PDE5 inhibitors like Cialis or Viagra should probably avoid consuming large amounts of alcohol, which may increase the potential for orthostatic signs and symptoms, including increase in heart rate, decrease in standing blood pressure, dizziness, and headache.

These tips will hopefully, be helpful.

Question

I have diabetes and have to take insulin to control it, a year ago I had a good sex drive but not anymore can no longer have sex with my wife three to four times a month like before.
I did see doctors and they prescribed Viagra. It is working fine but it is disruptive as I find that it is unnatural. There is no more spontaneity in our relationship.
The problem is I feel that I have to have any appointment for sex with my wife hours before (as this is how long it takes to work for me). My wife hates this fact a lot and is quite a turnoff for her.

I am writing so you can help me find a normal solution to my problem.
At the moment my confidence and my sexual performances are very low and my self-esteem has gone out of the window.
Answer

You need to try and make your sex sessions a bit more spontaneous and romantic. It’s not really true that you need to plan these two hours beforehand. Viagra will usually work inside an hour - sometimes earlier if you take it on an empty stomach.

You could discuss alternative medication such as Cialis, Levitra with your doctor. In particular, Cialis is now known to be much ‘longer acting’ than Viagra. If you take at around 4 0’clock you should be good from 8 o’clock to around midnight.

Good luck

Yours sincerely

Question

I am taking atenolol tablets BP 50mg for my hypertension (high blood pressure). Is Viagra risky for me?
Answer

I presume you have erection problems - and I’m sorry to hear that.

So far there has been no information to show that Viagra does not interact with atenolol.

Persons suffering from high BP can safely use Viagra dues to its blood pressure lowering properties, although the effect lasts only a short while.
I hope that you have also considered that t some of the medication given to you for high BP could be linked to your impotence. The beta-blocker group of drugs (of which atenolol is one) can cause impotence- though atenolol itself has not been shown to cause erection problems.

Best wishes

Question

At 27 I find it difficult to believe that I am suffering from ED (impotence).I had a short term encounter with a girl who was leaving last year. I tried to have sex with her three times and I could not get a full erection. It was not a big surprise as I had had a similar problem while masturbating and I really did not care for the short relationship. I did not think that it was psychological
I took action and went to see my GP who suggested a sperm test, which I took and gave to the local hospital, but I never received any results as I think they lost it.

The GP was never given any results. I don’t think I could go through that again.

Now I have met a lovely girl where we have both showed our affection for each other so it’ll be inevitable that I will have sex with her very soon, especially as she has the ‘no sex before three dates rule’ - which we have now done!

Another thing that worries me is that the head of my penis is a little sensitive and I attribute my problem to this.
Also I started taking Echinacea last year at the same time I was having these problems –could this be a cause?

I am an outgoing person; I make friends easily and love meeting new people. I just want to live life enthusiastically. I would be happy if I could just find one long-lasting relationship with a girl a can please.

Answer
The first piece of advice I will give is to involve your girlfriend in this problem, do not hide it from her.
It is common for men to hide these things from their girlfriends which make them feel let out. A lack of dialogue in matters like these can make the woman think that there something going on behind her back, even that the man is having sex elsewhere and is unable to sleep with her.

Have a check with a doctor. If he finds no physical cause then you will need some psychological help. You may ask for medication of the doctor can allow it as even a short term remedy can build your confidence substantially and even solve the problem. But first a physical cause has to be ruled out before taking any other lines of action.

Good luck.

Yours sincerely

Question

At my age of 32 I am yet to keep an erection long enough to have sex. I am not even thinking of getting into a relationship because of this. When I was in my twenties, I could get and keep erections but now I cannot even keep them in masturbation.
My family doctor is also a family friend; I have kept this way from him all these years. And I would really prefer to see a different doctor. .

Please can you help me – can I see someone other than my usual doctor?

I also want to know if I can access drugs from the NHS or is it possible for me to buy medication without a doctor’s prescription. I did a check on the symptoms of diabetes and I think I do not have it.

Answer

I feel for you. I think you need to find out the cause of your impotence. Although medication can help you still need the expert opinion of a doctor. Also he might do tests on the level of your testosterone (male hormone) to see if the level is normal.

I know you can make it out of this problem.
Good luck!

Question

Firstly, I am not in a regular relationship, I just have sex partners.

While I get excited enough to get an erection and sustain it at foreplay, I droop just before intercourse.
I get distracted wearing a condom but I do not find it a sufficient problem. I am stressed by this problem and I believe this just makes it worse.
What cure do you suggest?

Answer

David writes:
It is true that being worried over the problem makes it worse and .What you described is typical of ED where worry leads to lose of erection even while stopping just to put on a condom.
But I also think that you need to consult a professional and there are some in your area.

Also may I suggest that you can ask any willing lady to help you with the putting on the condom. You can have them do it by saying how sexy it is when they do it for you and while she does that she will be stroking you. I think you may be excited enough and the situation will be better.

Best wishes.

For the past four months I have lived with the fear of losing my new girlfriend because I cannot keep my erection. We have been through a lot of arguments and rows because of this. The problem is I get erections alright but I go limp as soon as we start to have sex. I have been having problems with erections for the past four months with my new girlfriend.
How can I alleviate this situation?
Answer

Sorry to hear about all this.

First of all you have to avoid all arguments with your girlfriend. For most guys your age the main causes of impotence is stress and anxiety.

I am sure the quarrels are making everything worse. I do not think that you have any physical causes but it causes no harm to see a doctor to clear that up with a simple check up.

The doctor will advise you as to the best way to beat this ‘droop’.

Good luck!

Yours sincerely

I am a diabetic and I cannot keep a hard erection long enough to have normal sexual intercourse with my wife involving penetration. I am not on any medication though. Please give some advice to remedy the situation.

Answer
It is very possible that diabetes is the cause of your problem although I cannot tell you for sure but it is quite common among diabetes sufferers to have erection problems.
The good news is that it can be treated with anti-ED drugs with success.
What you have to do right away is to see a doctor with expertise in this area. He will do a full physical check up and carry tests to see how well your diabetes is managed. I expect that he will put on some medication that will help you solve your problem and be happier in sexual encounters.
Almost certainly, he’ll then put you on a medication that should help you make love whenever you want to.

Good luck!

Question

I have recently developed a serious problem with my erection. I simply cannot get or sustain one of late. Once in a while I can manage a slight erection but that is it. Also I see that I take more time to be stimulated before I can get any erection and this happens both while I masturbate or during sexual encounters unlike before when I had them easily and I would wake in the morning with them.

All the tests undertaken by my GP came back negative. I was asked to go for counseling but I was frightened by the process. When I saw the form that I had to fill, most of the questions were related to mental illness. I don’t feel stressed at this time and I have been before but maintained my erections.

However my BP is more on the higher side and this is being looked after but I am not taking any medication for now. I worry that there may be another unfound reason to this that has not be found by the tests. I am not too confident with the approach of my GP; please your advice will be very welcome.

Answer

You mentioned that some tests were run but you do not mention what tests they were I will assume that the test included diabetes and hormone (testosterone) test I think your GP must have done all what he had to do.
Because of the tests and physical examination being negative it seems you do not have any physical problem but I realized that you might be a little overweight from what you described before; this can affect your erections.
Stress can also raise one’s blood pressure though you mention that you are not stressed. New information (2007) shows erectile dysfunction has a common relationship with arterial degradation – which can be a factor in high blood pressure.

I highly recommend that you see the counsellor you were referred to or then go to sex medicine clinic if you are not ok with that.

Good luck.

Yours sincerely
